Ojaru Genji and Ao no Chūjō's designs are based on the characters Ojaru 17 and Aobei (teenage version). Ojaru 17 debuted in 19th series episode 1 "Ojaru 17" (おじゃる17), while the teenage version of Aobei (along with his siblings Kisuke and Akane) debuted in episode 65 "Ojaru 17 vs 5 Miyabi na Kettou" (おじゃる17vs5 ミヤビな決とう).

Ojarumaru began with a manga series by Rin Inumaru that ran in Shogakukan's Ciao magazine.

Ojarumaru was actually conceived as an original anime series. It was not adapted from a pre-existing manga. However, it is true that a manga version (which was handled by Kanoko Temaru, and based on the anime) ran in Ciao. The serialization for that version began in the November 1998 issue of Ciao, which was released in October 1998, the same month the anime series premiered on NHK E-Tele. The final manga episode was released in the September 2001 issue.
