Does as much of the black community have an issue with anime these days? Especially people in their 30’s and under? I’m aware it used to be more of an issue back then, but I feel like more and more people are chill about it now.
Just saying, at my workplace I once had to help out in a different section for one day due to being understaffed. At the start meeting, there was about a dozen or so black guys among them and almost all of there were wearing various anime shirts (to be clear, this is the sort of workplace T-shirts are what virtually everyone is wearing). I only remembered it because it was around the time Youtuber “Cilvanis” did a video skit about people who used to mock anime later becoming fans (he didn’t specify race being a factor in the video, he just happens to be black). But yeah, speaking of YouTube, like a ton of anime reactors and such are black as well. I dunno, I guess maybe it’s more of the anime community has a strong percentage of black people in it, but within the black community as a whole anime is still fairly niche? Granted, Rose did specify she faced backlash in high school, and well, people are just generally more stuck up at that age it seems. Especially the teens who feel they have to “be mature” which they translate as not being able to enjoy something “not mature”. I feel most people grow out of this “I have to be super mature!” phase once they enter college and such. But I apologize if I’m rambling, just curious. I hope Rose and her club have a very successful convention! |

You know I never even thought of this. Me and all my friends growing up loved anime, 4kids, toonami, jetix, if anime was on anywhere we would watch it no matter what. But that was just us. I never thought the black community in particular was against anime, but more so that anime (and Japanese entertainment in general) in the west was more of a new thing that hasn’t really had time to gain traction, and the older folks in society who didn’t grow up with it won’t be interested in or understand it. Even today it’s still a pretty niche selection of interests. |

Seems a bit of a strawman to me. Back then still a lot of my black friends loved anime, and by looking at many top artists, players, and creators liking anime it is heavily popular in the community.

Ah yes, famous white cartoons and characters like Usagi Tsukino and Naruto Uzumaki. Unironically a lot of people subconsciously see japanese people as the white people of Asia and "non-poc". You can clearly see that when anime voice actors preach about how dark-skinned characters should be voiced by the correct minorities but if you tell them they should stop voicing japanese anime characters too and let japanese americans step in, they start pulling mental gymnastics about why it's not the same. |

This isn't the first time someone tried this. I remember when an anime con tried to do this a few years ago and people got mad non-black people showed up but realized they couldn't do anything because refusing service based on skin-color was illegal in America so you can't actually have segregated communities. I assume it's the same here as well unless they found some weird loophole to skirt discrimination laws.
