On the face of it. that sounds like hardly anyone, but I don't know how big this combined workforce is.

I hate to say this about people and their work but here goes anyway: For a merger on near identical coverage it is expected for jobs to be shed. Really annoying for the people who have to cover even more tasks for the same pay, but expected.

Mergers are to the advantage of share holders not consumers or workers

I find it kind of amusing that the same day they say they're laying off staff, the website is repeatedly crashing.

Would have been more surprising if this didn't happen eventually. Eliminating redundant positions once things have stabilized is a common practice in any merger.

I knew they were going to be fired when Sony come, there's no way to pretend to be in this sector so long to fix a website and put in basic functions even if the server doesn't "hold up to so many people", quality and quantity obviously go hand in hand, that's all see this right away, man googlecloud already existed since 2008 many, cr came to change dantacenter 2019 with a lot of delay and delay, "get paid per month sitting behind the table we don't watch "cartoons" it's just "business" -someone on linkedin

Understandable why its happening so I can't get mad. Still sucks for the people getting laid off and hope they find work soon.

I'm always curious to see what this merger has/will accomplish. Have things generally gotten better or worse? It looks like the crunchyroll site is starting to fix some of its issues that have plagued it for a while (specifically dubs without proper subtitles to translate signs).

Mixed.
They are working out some annoyances, like more series getting proper language selection rather than separate 'seasons' for different dubs. They definitely have the licensing muscle to grab top tier shows, and no more Cruncy/Funi sub/dub split shows (though I think for a very few series this is still shaking out.)
On the other hand, website performance has been in the toilet lately, and they are using almost exclusively Funimation dub talent only (except for reprised roles it seems) meaning fewer dubs overall per season and less variety in the talent used, which obviously sucks for anyone who enjoys dubs.

Surely “we’re paying two people where one will do, let’s get rid of one of them” is a cost-saving measure.

Here's hoping that the people responsible for Crunchyroll Originals branding, as well as the people who think that Crunchyroll should make Western cartoons like Margaret Dean, Alden Budill, Joanne Waage, etc. would be sacked.

Crunchyroll had many site issues. Funimation was worse, Sony knew it going in.

It is, but they're only considered redundant because the company doesn't want to pay for a deep roster.

Less than a year ago at CRX they were making a big deal of their first job fair. I wonder how that plays into the situation. I was planning on applying but held back due to certain obligations I have with my current job, I'm glad I did!
