This is really nice to see after all the dudebro ~movie critics~ bitching about how "unrelatable" this movie is.

Did you know: the creator admitted that Turning Red is about puberty including yes, turning red, a girl's first period

And she also listed some anime inspirations

"Pixar’s ‘Asian Tween Fever Dream’ comedy was spun out of Domee Shi’s personal faves"

Quote:
Sailor Moon
Ranma 1/2
Fruits Basket
Inuyasha

Transformations, of course Laughing

Oh, apparently there's a stupid Twitter war that started with Turning Red but somehow veered into Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid Laughing

EDIT: Posting the link here is enough. We don't need the Twitter posts reposted here. - Key]

Very cute art! I just watched Turning Red and loved it. I'm not Chinese like Mei, but I do relate to being a Canadian girl who went to middle school in the early 2000s and I feel the movie captured that very well.

Representation and seeing yourself on screen is very important. It make sense for people who aren't the target audience for a movie to feel unwelcome and voiceless with a piece of media.

Exactly that; said responses remind me of the time I was at a sci-fi con (Ad Astra) here in Toronto and hearing from an older white gentleman how he didn't like Black Panther (I'm going to bet because of the way the titular character is, as well as the way his people act, that made him similarly uncomfortable the way said dudebros were about Turning Red.)
