Extremely standard as always with SE as they have done a great job maintaining the game so far! I can’t wait to work on finishing the Endwalker Expansion storyline during my vacation next week…. I should have been finished with this already with no luck

Is it possible to play this game "from the start" until you catch up with latest expansions?

As far as I can tell from what my daughter tells me, yes you can. She's been doing that because she only started a few months ago.

Yep! The free trial referenced in the article includes the base game and the expansion that comes after it. Other expansions might add new side quests or job quests to old areas, but they don't override anything major that already existed with the base game. The most I can think of is a handful of NPC side characters getting new outfits with each new expansion, but their functionality doesn't change at all.

Not only is it possible, that's really the intended way to play the game. The next few major patches are even going to tweak some of the earlier content so that you can play solo through some instances that previously required parties.

Yep. And as others mentioned, the 6.x patch series over the next year will be making all story dungeons and 4-man bosses solo friendly with NPCs.

I played this game for a while a couple years back. With the release of the free trial, I'd thought I'd give it another go, especially since my daughter is now playing. You'd think Sony or Squeenix would let me start up again as a free player, but so far I cannot figure out how to do so.

I signed up for the free trial and downloaded it to my PS4 on which it had never been installed before. (Had a PS3 back then.) When I launched the game, it found I had played before (probably over the PS Network) and required me to sign in under my old Square-Enix ID. Under that ID I can only pay for additional months of subscription. They don't, for instance, offer a token I could use to "pay" for my subscription with the free trial.

Wouldn't it make more sense from a marketing perspective to let me play for free again so I might choose to resubscribe later? From my observations that isn't how Japanese companies think at all.

There aren't obvious ways around this problem from reading online; you actually have to contact S-E support and ask them to change your ID. I doubt they would do so in this case. I could start building an entire new identity with a different PSN account, a different SE account, different emails, and a new account on the PS4. Maybe.

It’s kind of hard to fully say… the best way to know if you can is to download and try to sign up again…

The thing that always keeps me from playing it is the huge time synce that I know I get my self into with MMO's specifically and my Blacklog on video games is just to large and I feel like if I put 1000's of hrs or years into this game, then I will never get to finishing alot of my other games but i like the idea that Yoshi-p is implementing a Single player compaign so to speak to give players that are normally not prioritizing online play a chance for your typical jrpg fan to experience this game and its story. I played Wow for like over 5 years before but that was back when I had alot of real life friends that were interested and it was quite engaging at the time but now with my current life style changes and activities just hitting the ceiling (anime, video games, manga, movies, tv shows, etc), I need away I can just play and beat FF XIV with out spending years on it and it looks like this might just be my ticket into this fantasy world.

Technically, no, considering the very beginning of Final Fantasy XIV was discontinued in November of 2012, two years after its 2010 launch in order to be completely revamped before being relaunched in 2013 as the current game, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

The story from before ARR, is referenced many times in the current game.

There are effectively two different types of accounts -- trial accounts and paid accounts. If you have a trial account, if you ever pay for a subscription, it is converted to a paid account, and you can never convert it back to a trial account. You can either pay to renew your subscription or start over from scratch with a new account. I haven't played on a console, but if your SE account is tied to your PSN account, then that would mean that you'd have to make a new PSN account to use the free trial again.

From a marketing perspective it would make sense, but from a technical perspective it gets very messy; there are a lot of restrictions on trial accounts that paid accounts don't have, and they don't want people to subscribe for one month to temporarily lift all of those restrictions and then go back to playing for free after that. It'd be a pain to deal with somebody who went above the level cap, put a bunch of items on the market board, hired retainers, and then wanted to go back to having a trial account. I'm sure they could work out a fair way to deal with that if they thought hard enough, but they've probably decided that it's not worth the development effort.

For what it's worth, they do occasionally have "free login campaigns", where paid accounts whose subscriptions have lapsed can log in and play for a couple of weeks, so you might keep an eye out for one of those if you don't feel like subscribing again.

One of the nice things about FFXIV is that you get all the EXP you need just playing through the story. Grinding is really just for the extra jobs, if you pick the right job for you right away and start the story you'll never have to grind for EXP, they always give you more than enough with every cumulative main story quest to get you to the right level. You'll also want to do your job quests which have their own stories to unlock job abilities. A lot of streamers are playing the entire game from start to present in a few months.

Oh, and for anyone considering getting back into the game after being away for a long time, keep in mid that Endwalker comes with Stormblood and Shadowbringers so if you already have Heavansward on your platform of choice you can save $20 and pass on the complete edition.
